Welcome to the Dino Trail!

Local Arts, Local History, Local Lizards (er . . . actually dinos are ancestors of birds!)

Thank you Audiences and Partners for a Great First Dino Trail Week in July, 2025! See below for an idea of what to expect next summer and for any important Dino Events coming up in the Connecticut River Valley . . .

Dino Trail Week, co-presented by Piti Theatre with Dino Trail partners up and down the Valley, is a celebratory week of performances, films, talks, interactive exhibits and all ages activities inspired by dinosaur footprints in the Connecticut River Valley of western Massachusetts and related history. Why? Because this is where the first scientific study in the world of dinosaur footprints took place! You can learn more on Pocumtuck Valley Memorial Association's award winning website "Impressions from a Lost World."

November 2nd: Identify It Day at the Beneski Museum of Natural History

1 pm

Amherst, MA: Join fellow fossil and rock enthusiasts at the Beneski Museum of Natural History for the 10th annual “Identify It Day” on Sunday November 2 from 1PM – 4PM. The program takes place on the 2nd floor of the museum. Admission is free.

Is there a mysterious fossil that you found while backpacking, or a picture of the bizarre bird in your backyard? Bring in your fossils, seashells, rocks, meteorites, feathers, leaves, or photographs of mammals, birds, reptiles, fish, flowers, and insects to the Museum. Scientists will attempt to identify your discoveries while showing you some specimens from the Beneski’s greater collections. Stop by, with or without mystery objects, to see (and touch) the scientific specimens out on display. Items identified in previous years have included a whale vertebrae, dinosaur footprint, a mammoth tusk, the hip of a very large pig, an amazing man-made slag crystal, an ancient arrowhead from the Connecticut River Valley and some wonderful seashells.

Peter Crowley, geology professor notes, "The history of the Earth is long and interesting, so there is a good story behind everything that you find. If you tell us the story about how and where you found it, we can complete the story and tell you what it is and how it formed. It is fun and exciting because you never know what people are going to bring in”

The Beneski Museum located on the campus of Amherst College is home to over 200,000 specimens with nearly 2,000 on display for public viewing. There is ample parking and the building is wheelchair accessible. The Museum is open Tue-Fri from 11-4 and weekends from 10-5. For further information call (413) 542-5054.

Wednesday, 7/9: Dino Trails Day at the Beneski Museum of Natural History

On Wednesday July 9th from 10 am - 3 pm, join Piti Theatre Company and Beneski museum staff as they help folks explore dinosaurs and importantly the evidence of dinosaurs that once roamed the Connecticut River Valley. The museum boasts a world-renowned collection of dinosaur footprints found locally and studied internationally.

The museum will host guided visits which will be combined with open-ended dinosaur scavenger hunts to provide visitors with access to our amazing collection of dinosaurs and dinosaur trackways.

The day will conclude with a dino-themed version of Piti's international touring show "Story Wizards" at 2:30 pm where the audience creates a brand new story (that just might have a dinosaur) alongside Piti's professional actors.

Story Wizards is supported in part by a grant from the Amherst Cultural Council, a local agency which is supported by the Massachusetts Cultural Council, a state agency.

@ 6 pm (Story Wizards with a Dino-Theme for Dino Trail Week)

What could be more fun than making up a brand new story? How about a new story about . . . dinosaurs. Piti Theatre's international touring show Story Wizards is returning by popular demand to the Greenfield Public Library as part of a Valley-wide DinoFest on July 12.

The plot? A Wizard Even Crankier than the Story Wizard has stolen the world's tales and he sets off to find them. Luckily he discovers a musical being named Laurella living in a giant mushroom who introduces him to - the audience! New stories are born from children's suggestions and onstage participation.
